Delhi Gym Owner Shot Dead In Office, Killers Take Away CCTV Recorder

A gym owner was shot dead in his office by three men in East Delhi's Preet Vihar on Friday, and took the CCTV recorder with them, making the probe more complicated, police said.

The victim, 45-year-old Mahendra Aggarwal, ran a chain of Energy Gym and Spa, and sold gym equipment too. He was in his company headquarters office above one of his gyms around 8 pm when three armed men entered and immediately fired a number of shots at him. A bullet to his head killed him, police said.

While escaping, the killers took away the recording device attached to the CCTV security cameras of the office.

Police are now scanning footage from other CCTV cameras in the area to get clues. A forensics team also inspected the scene of crime.

Police said relatives are being asked if they suspect anyone's involvement or any enmity he had.

Apple CEO Tim Cook Conveyed Concerns About App Store Curbs to Japan PM: Report

Apple Chief Executive Tim Cook asked Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida to consider protecting users when regulating distribution of smartphone apps, Nikkei reported on Friday citing sources.

Apple has faced heightened scrutiny over its App Store practices that charge a 30 percent fee on payments and subscriptions and does not allow iPhones to use apps from third party app stores.

Cook asked Kishida to make sure that regulations around distribution of apps do not undermine user privacy and security, the report added.

Apple and the Japanese PM's office did not immediately respond to Reuters requests for comment.

Earlier this month, Apple said it had invested more than $100 billion (nearly Rs. 8,27,100 crore) in its Japanese supply network over the last five years, as Cook visited the country.

Revenue from Apple's services business, which includes the App Store, has been growing at a rapid pace in the last few years and now hovers at about $19 billion (nearly Rs. 1,57,144 crore) per quarter.

It was reported a few days back that Apple's Japan unit is being charged $98 million (nearly Rs. 810 crore) in additional taxes for bulk sales of iPhones and other Apple devices to foreign tourists that were incorrectly exempted from the consumption tax, the Nikkei newspaper said.

Citing unidentified sources, the Nikkei reported on Tuesday that bulk purchases of iPhones by foreign shoppers were discovered at some Apple stores with at least one transaction involving an individual buying hundreds of handsets at once.

Japan allows tourists staying less than six months to buy items without paying the 10 percent consumption tax, but the exemption does not apply to purchases for the purpose of resale.

Apple Japan is believed to have filed an amended tax return, according to Nikkei.

In response to a Reuters' request for comment, the company only said in an emailed message that tax-exempt purchases were currently unavailable at its stores. The Tokyo Regional Taxation Bureau declined to comment.

Google Voice to Alert Users With 'Suspected Spam Caller' Warning for Suspicious Calls

Google Voice will now make it more easy for a user to ignore spam calls with the launch of a new update. Google has now added a warning to its Voice feature which will alert the user by flagging “Suspected spam caller” label on calls that may seem suspicious. The user can also remove a number from the spam list by simply marking a call to be not spam. The enhanced secure calling feature adds to Google Voice's recent addition of Wi-Fi and network cellular switching.

According to a recent announcement by the tech giant, Google Voice will now protect its users from unwanted calls and potentially harmful scams by displaying a red “suspected spam caller” label on all calls that will appear suspicious. The selection of numbers as spam will be done using advanced artificial intelligence.

The spam label for a number will be displayed on the caller screen as well as in the call history. The user will have a choice to let a call remain spam or remove it by confirming the identity of the number as a spam or a genuine contact. In case if the number is confirmed to be a spam, the future calls from that particular contact will go directly into voicemail. Meanwhile, removing a number from spam list will not show any warning on future calls.

Google has informed that the phased rollout of the feature has started from December 29 and may take up to 15 days for the feature to appear on Google Voice. It will be eventually available to all Google Voice users.

The suspected spam label will be activated automatically if the Voice spam filter is off. To automatically send a suspected spam call to voicemail, go to Settings > Security > Filter Spam >Turn it On.

Samsung Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 with Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 processor was unveiled by the South Korean tech giant on December 28. The new Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 comes with major performance improvements with the new Gen 3 processor, an upgrade from previously launched laptop with 12th Gen Intel processor. The company first unveiled the Intel-powered Galaxy Book2 Pro 360 back in February. The new model was recently announced in South Korea and will be released on January 16.

In an official release, Samsung has announced the company's premium laptop, the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx Gen 3 processor. The mobile PC comes with enhanced speed and efficiency, along with a stylus and a 360-degree swivel display.

As of now, the company has now announced the date for launching the product in global markets, including India.

The laptop will run on Windows 11. The company claims that the Galaxy Book 2 Pro 360 with Snapdragon chipset comes with a better battery life of up to 35 hours of video playback on single charge.

A time-lapse video of 60 seconds showing the effects of a blizzard that covered a US town in snow completely in a 48-hour period is going viral on the internet.

The video begins with a straightforward road, a few automobiles, and a chair on the grass; afterwards, snow begins to fall in the region as a result of the blizzard's monster storm effect. In the second half of the video, the entire area is blanketed in snow, making it challenging to discern what lies beneath the snow.

The video has become so extremely viral on the internet that it has received over 3 million views and more than 50,000 likes. Many viewers left comments on this lovely but unsettling video.

Meanwhile, the American National Weather Service predicted that by the weekend, temperatures will rise to about 50 degrees Fahrenheit (10 degrees Celsius), although officials issued a warning that snowmelt could result in minor floods.

The extreme weather over the weekend sent temperatures below freezing in all mainland US states, including in Texas along the Mexico border, where some arriving migrants have struggled to find shelter.

At one point on Saturday, nearly 1.7 million customers were without electricity in the biting cold, according to the tracker PowerOutage.us.

Road ice and whiteout conditions also led to the temporary closure of some of the nation's busiest transport routes, including part of the cross-country Interstate 70 highway.

The perfect storm of fierce snow squalls, howling wind, and sub-zero temperatures forced the cancellation of thousands of flights in recent days, including around 5,900 on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to tracking site FlightAware.com.

Pele, Diego Maradona, Lionel Messi: Who Is The Greatest Of All Time?

When FIFA declared Pele and Diego Maradona jointly the players of the 20th century, and effectively the best of all time, they side-stepped but did not resolve a heated debate that has grown more complicated as Lionel Messi has dominated the 21st century. Just who is the greatest? Pele, who died on Thursday, and the two Argentines all won the sport's greatest prize -- the World Cup -- and were undoubtedly the kings of their eras.

AFP Sport looks at who is the best between the magical Brazilian, the controversial Maradona, who passed away in November 2020 at the age of 60, and a second Argentine, the twinkling Messi who is still playing:

Triple crown v single titles--

Pele played in four World Cups, winning three times, a record not yet beaten and giving him one more than Maradona and Messi combined. He was just 17 in 1958 when he was world champion in Sweden, scoring six goals, two in the final. Pele was injured in the second match as Brazil won the 1962 World Cup but claimed a third title, and sealed his international reputation, in 1970 as his magical side beat Italy in the Mexico City final.

Maradona, not picked in the squad that won the World Cup at home in 1978 and sent off in a tournament-ending 3-1 loss to Brazil in Spain in 1982, shot to global fame in 1986 for the right and wrong reasons. His infamous 'Hand of God' goal against England was followed by an individual effort voted FIFA's 'Goal of the Century'. He scored twice in the semi-final win over Belgium and supplied the crucial pass in the 3-2 win against West Germany in the final.

After Messi completed his World Cup quest in Qatar this month, the ailing Pele saluted on Instagram: "Messi winning his first World Cup, as his trajectory deserved. Diego is certainly smiling." The Argentine has a complete set of major medals: a World Cup (2022), a Copa America (2021), four Champions Leagues and three Club World Cups as well as a multitude of domestic Spanish and French trophies.

All three men wore the No 10 shirt. Pele's role was often described as a "nine and a half", his attacking skills yielding 1,281 goals in 1,363 matches for his clubs, Santos and New York Cosmos, and the Brazilian national team.

Maradona, known as "D10S" (a word play with the number 10 and God in Spanish) played in a free role, more the playmaker, and his career statistics reflect that: 345 goals in 692 matches.

Messi, who plays a variety of attacking positions, has also piled up the goals: 793 in 1,003 professional matches by the end of 2022.

Role model v a rebel and a quiet child--

Pele was the clean-cut hero, scandal-free, honourable, sporting, with a career spent at just two clubs -- Santos (1956-74) and New York Cosmos (1975-77).

Maradona played for six teams, was sent off at the 1982 World Cup, scored with his hand against England in the 1986 tournament, was banned in Spain for fighting on the pitch, and was sent home in disgrace from the 1994 World Cup after failing a drugs test. He also suffered a cocaine addiction.

Messi, the quiet child, resembled Pele in his loyalty to his first club Barcelona until their money troubles allowed Paris Saint-Germain to pry him away in 2021. His difficulties with the Spanish tax authorities and a host of sponsorship deals have not tarnished his image.

Ego wars until they reconciled in 2016, Pele and Maradona sparred over who was the greatest. Pele has a museum. Maradona said Pele belonged "in a museum".

Maradona, who enjoyed showing off his Fidel Castro and Che Guevara tattoos, mocked the Brazilian's respect for authority.

Pele condemned Maradona as "not being an example" to youngsters because of his drug problems.

Watch: A Deer's Face Was Frozen Over Due To Extreme Cold. 2 Hikers Helped

The extreme cold weather dubbed as "blizzard of the century," across many parts of the USA & Canada has inflicted immense misery on millions of people and caused unprecedented fear and chaos. Many other parts of the world are also battling extremely frigid temperatures. Not just humans, but animals too are suffering from nature's wrath. In a recent undated video, a deer was seen with its mouth, eyes & ears completely frozen over due to the severe winter storm. Thankfully, two hikers came to its rescue and helped the poor animal. The exact location of the video is not yet known.

In a video shared on Reddit, two hikers spotted a deer whose face was completely frozen over. It is assumed that the deer was trying to dig for food under the snow with its head, and that's how its face got encased in ice. When the hikers approached the deer, it ran away in fear. However, after a while, the two men got hold of the distressed animal and removed the ice covering its face. The relieved animal was then seen running away.

Reddit users thanked the hikers for saving the life of the deer and hailed their efforts. One user wrote, ''I wonder if humans are the only species who help other animals, out of pure empathy. I'm sure we're not, but I definitely think it's a beautiful part of humanity.'' Another commented, ''poor deer. glad they helped him. winter is rough for animals.''

Many were left wondering how it happened. A user offered an explanation and replied, ''Most likely mild weather with lots of heavy wet snow, digging through said snow for food... Face gets covered with sticky wet snow. Then you get a crazy drop in temp with increase in wind resulting in flash freezing. Said sticky snow on face freezes.'' 

Another commented, ''Probably got caught in a blizzard or just a storm out on a large open field. Sometimes the winds can get stupidly strong and carry snow and ice from the ground. It has a way of clinging to stuff.''

The International Cricket Council (ICC) on Thursday announced nominees for the Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2022 award. Pakistan skipper Babar Azam, Australia spinner Adam Zampa, Zimbabwe all-rounder Sikandar Raza and West Indies' Shai Hope are the contenders to win the award. The ICC Men's ODI Cricketer of the Year 2021 is in the running to do a repeat in 2022. Babar Azam once again showed his prowess in the 50-over format, showing once again why he has ruled the roost at the top of the ICC Men's ODI Player Rankings since July 2021.

The 29-year-old Pakistan skipper registered eight scores of more than fifty in nine matches this year, three of which he converted into hundreds. He finished the season with 679 runs at an astounding 84.87 average.

Adam Zampa continued to show why he has been a vital cog in the Australian white-ball setup, finishing the year as the highest wicket-taker for his country in ODI cricket.

The leggie had his joint-most productive year in ODI cricket, matching his debut year tally of 30 wickets. His feat was even more impressive this year because nine of his 12 matches were at home, where conditions aren't ideal for spinners.

The 30-year-old started the year with a four-wicket haul and finished with a couple more to cap off a fantastic 2022.

Zimbabwe's resurgence on the international stage in 2022 was largely due to one man - Sikandar Raza.

Raza scored 645 runs at an average of 49.61 and a strike rate of 87.16, adding two fifties to his three centuries. All of his runs came against top teams that were dominant in the white-ball game in 2022.

The 36-year-old scored three centuries, all while chasing, two of which resulted in victories and another nearly taking Zimbabwe over the line against India.

Shai Hope made his ODI debut in 2016, and since then, he has finished every year as the West Indies' leading ODI run-scorer. In 2022, Shai Hope was once again one of the West Indies' few shining stars in a difficult year.

Hope did not have the best of starts in 2022, but in typical fashion, began to grind out runs in the second half. He finished the year with 709 runs at an average of 35.45, including three hundreds and two fifties.

RBI Suggests Common Approach to Crypto Assets to Avoid Potential Financial Risks

To address potential financial stability risks and protect investors, it is important to arrive at a common approach to crypto assets, the Financial Stability Report released by RBI said on Thursday.

In this context, various options are being considered internationally, it said.

One option is to apply the same-risk-same-regulatory-outcome principle and subject them to the same regulation applicable to traditional financial intermediaries and exchanges, the report said.

Another option is to prohibit crypto assets, since their real life use cases are next to negligible and the challenge is that different countries have different legal systems and individual rights vis-à-vis state powers, it noted.

A third option is to let it implode and make it systemically irrelevant as the underlying instability and riskiness will ultimately prevent the sector from growing, it said.

The third option, however, is fraught with risks as the sector may become more interconnected with mainstream finance and divert financing away from traditional finance with broader effect on the real economy, the report said.

Regulating new technology and business models after they have grown to a systemic level is challenging, it pointed out.

To promote responsible innovation and to mitigate financial stability risks in crypto ecosystem, the report said it is vital for policymakers to design an appropriate policy approach.

In this context, under India's G20 presidency, one of the priorities is to develop a framework for global regulation, including the possibility of prohibition, of unbacked crypto assets, stablecoins and decentralised finance (DeFi), it said.

The collapse and bankruptcy of the crypto exchange FTX and subsequent sell-off in the crypto assets market have highlighted the inherent vulnerabilities in the crypto ecosystem.

Recently, Binance, the largest crypto exchange, also prohibited withdrawals of stablecoins on its platform. The implosion of FTX was preceded by failure of TerraUSD/Luna, an algorithmic stablecoin, a run on Celsius, a crypto lender, and bankruptcy of Three Arrows Capital, a cryptocurrency hedge fund.

Observing that the turmoil has provided several insights, it said crypto assets are highly volatile.

The price of Bitcoin has tumbled by 74 percent (as on December 14, 2022) from its peak in November 2021. Other crypto assets have also experienced similar falls in prices and heightened volatility.

In addition, crypto assets exhibit high correlations with equities, it noted.

Furthermore, it said, contrary to claims that they are an alternative source of value due to inflation hedging benefits, crypto assets' value has fallen even as inflation rose.

Second, the report said, the collapse of TerraUSD/Luna is a reminder of how so-called stablecoins that promise to maintain a stable value relative to fiat currency are subject to classic confidence runs.

Finally, it said, the failure of FTX and Celsius reveals that crypto exchanges and trading platforms were carrying out different functions such as lending, brokerage, clearing and settlement that have different risks without appropriate governance structures.

This exposed them to credit, market and liquidity risks disproportionate to what was necessary to discharge their essential functions, it said, adding leverage is a constant theme across the crypto ecosystem, making failures rapid and losses huge and sudden.

Man Forgets Wife After Toilet Break During Road Trip, She Walks 20 Km

In an epic act of forgetfulness and absent-mindedness, a man in Thailand accidentally left his wife behind during a road trip, forcing her to walk over 12 miles (19.31 km). According to a New York Post report, Boontom Chaimoon, 55, and his wife, Amnuay Chaimoon, 49, took a road trip on Sunday to spend the holidays in her hometown in the Maha Sarakham Province. The couple was having a nice time together until the husband felt the need to relieve himself. He parked his car by the roadside at 3 am to take a quick toilet break.

Meanwhile, with no public toilets around, the woman also stepped out of the car and ventured into a nearby jungle to pee. However, the man did not notice her getting out of the vehicle. When she returned, there was no sight of the car or her husband. She soon realised her husband had left without her, leaving her stranded. More so, she did not have her mobile phone with her as it was kept in a bag inside the car. Since it was dark, the woman was extremely scared and confused, but she decided to walk to seek help.

She walked about 20 km (approximately 12.4 miles) and reached the district of Kabin Buri by 5 am. Thankfully, she was able to contact the local police who asked her to ring her husband. Since she did not remember her husband's mobile number, she dialed her own number at least 20 times but did not receive any response. 

At around 8 am, she was able to contact her husband with the help of cops. All this while, the husband had no clue that his wife was not in the car, and was under the impression that she was soundly asleep in the backseat. By that time, he had driven all the way to Korat province, 159.6 km (100 miles) away, according to Thailand news site Daily News.

When he realized what transpired, he quickly turned around to drive back to pick up his spouse. He was extremely sorry about his action and apologized to his wife profusely. Turns out, even after going through such an ordeal, the woman did not argue with him when he picked her up. The woman revealed that they have been married for the last 27 years and have a son who is 26 years old.

In Tamil Nadu Village, Feces Dumped In Water Tank For Dalits

A shocking case of caste discrimination has surfaced from a village in Tamil Nadu, the home of Periyar movement, where human feces were found dumped in a water tank meant for the Scheduled Caste community. The district authorities who went to investigate, found the horrors did not end there. The village still practices untouchability -- to the extent that the local tea shop has a two-glass system and the Dalits are not allowed in temple premises. The BJP is sending a team to investigate tomorrow.

Pudukottai collector Kavitha Ramu and district police chief Vandita Pandey visited the Irayur village in central Tamil Nadu on Tuesday after complaints that a huge quantity of human waste was found in a 10,000-litre water tank that was supplying drinking water to the Dalit community of around 100 people.

Villagers said in recent days, many of their children had fallen ill. After doctors suggested that the drinking water source could be causing the problem, some young men climbed the tank and checked inside.

"A huge quantity of feces was found dumped inside the water tank. So much so the water had turned yellow. Without knowing that, for a week or so, the people were drinking this water. When children fell ill -- that's when the truth came out,'' said Moksha Gunavalagan, a political activist in the area.

It is not yet clear who is responsible. The fence around the water tank had been opened in the last few days. "When the young men climbed the tank, they found the lid open... No one has reported seeing anyone climb and dump the waste into the water tank,'' collector Kavitha Ramu told NDTV.

Locals say caste discrimination runs deep in the area. For three generations, they had never been allowed into the village temple. The village tea shop still has a different set of glasses for the Scheduled Castes.

The Collector and the chief of the district police went to check for themselves and a case was filed against the tea shop owner. The two also took the entire Scheduled Caste community to the village temple and asked them to identify the persons who stopped them from entering the premises.

A prayer ritual was in progress at the time. Suddenly, a woman belonging to the so-called upper castes, apparently in a trance, declared that she was possessed by the deity who does not want the lower caste people in the temple. The police have filed a case against her as well.  

Sindhuja, who holds a BSc degree in mathematics, said she had never entered the temple premises in her 22 years of growing up in the village. "For three generations, we have not been allowed inside the temple. That the collector today took us inside is a matter of great happiness for us. This right should continue and not just here, but every place that wants to keep us out,'' she said.

The 22-year-old says they are willing not just to pay taxes but also contribute to the upkeep and maintenance of the temple. "We are not less in any way and want to be treated as such," he said.

Another resident, Lata, said since she married and came to the village, she had never entered the temple either. ​"For the first time, I went inside and saw what the god looks like in this temple. So, we are very happy. But this should continue. It should not be just for today.''

Nearly a hundred years ago, long before Independence, Ramasamy Periyar had started the temple entry protests in the state. It also inspired the Dravidian movement – a philosophy that still dominates politics in the state, which makes the casteist backlash all the more shocking.  

The collector said no immediate trigger for the sudden caste tension had come to light so far.

Amazon Working on Standalone App for Sports Content: Report

Amazon.com is working on a standalone app for watching sports content, the Information reported on Wednesday, citing a source with direct knowledge of the plan.

Sports remains one of the biggest attractions for live viewing as US audiences increasingly switch from pay TV subscriptions to streaming apps.

The move will likely complement Amazon's effort to double down on sports programming through its Prime Video service, a key channel to attract consumers to its shopping platform.

Amazon already owns the rights to stream games including National Football League's Thursday Night Football franchise and Premier League soccer matches in the UK, setting it up to better compete with sports streaming leader Walt Disney Co.

Last week, Alphabet unit YouTube also signed a multi-year deal to exclusively stream NFL's Sunday Ticket package of games in the United States.

It was not clear when Amazon would roll out the sports app and whether it would go through with the plan, according to the report.

Amazon did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.

The company has been reviewing unprofitable business units and has laid off some staff to cover rising costs and a demand downturn as inflation-wary consumers and businesses spend less.

In India, Amazon launched Prime Gaming for PC a few days back, giving users access to various free PC games every month. This is a subscription-based gaming service which can be availed along the Amazon Prime plan. In December 2022, Prime Gaming provides access to eight game titles.  

To avail the Prime Gaming service in India, users can head to the Prime Gaming website by signing in with their credentials, and click on the Activate Prime Gaming button from the top right corner of the screen.

Ranji Trophy: Priyank Panchal Leads Gujarat's Fightback Against Chandigarh

Opener Priyank Panchal led from the front with an unbeaten half-century as Gujarat gave a strong reply to Chandigarh's 304 in their Ranji Trophy Group D match on Wednesday. Panchal was batting on 87 off 146 balls (8x4, 1x6) in company with wicketkeeper-batter Het Patel (37) in an unbroken 53-run stand as Gujarat were 249/3 at stumps on day two, trailing Chandigarh by 55 runs. Panchal was also involved in two key partnerships; first with Kathan Patel (47; 66b), and then Priyesh Patel (62; 108b) to take the team forward.

Earlier, Chandigarh managed to add 57 runs to their overnight total before being dismissed in 116 overs.

Lather, who was unbeaten on 68, was dismissed 13 runs short of a century, becoming Hardik Patel's third victim (3/39).

Shen Patel claimed 4/85 while Sidharth Desai (2/74) ended Chandigarh's first innings dismissing Hartejassvi Kapoor.

In reply, Gujarat put on an opening stand of 76 with Panchal and Patel before the latter fell short of his half-century after being dismissed by Lather.

Having shone with the bat, Lather was also the pick of the bowlers for Chandigarh and took all the three wickets to fall.

After trapping Patel lbw, Lather accounted for Chandigarh No 3 Saurabh Chauhan (11) with the addition of just 17 runs. But Panchal held firm and forged a century-plus stand with Patel.

Suthar stars in Rajasthan's big win over Puducherry

Manav Suthar completed a match haul of 11 wickets to compliment his unbeaten 96 as Rajasthan romped to a 101-run win over Puducherry in a Ranji Trophy match. A day after the 20-year-old propped their first innings total to 335 with a 97-run last wicket partnership, Suthar returned to grab the limelight with his left-arm spin in a match haul of 11/62 as Rajasthan bowled out Puducherry twice in the day -- 104 and 130 while following-on -- to seal a seven-point victory.

Suthar was on a song in the first innings en route to 17-6-33-8, while Ravi Bishnoi claimed 2/33.

Paras Dogra was Puducherry's top-scorer with a 68-ball 33 but once Suthar dismissed him, the rest of the batters fell in addition of just 29 runs. Their first innings lasted just 38 overs.

Following-on, Puducherry lasted 40.1 overs this time with Mahipal Lomror claiming 4/38, while Deepak Hooda bagged 2/13.

Suthar this time opened the bowling but Rajasthan openers saw through his spell. Lomror gave the first breakthrough dismissing Neyan Shyam Kangayan (17), before Hooda chipped in to open the floodgates.

Pandey slams double in 100th first-class match

Manish Pandey slammed an unbeaten double century in his 100th first-class match as Karnataka declared their first innings score for a mammoth 603/7 against Goa. Overnight on 90, Pandey continued his assault on the Goan attack to notch his double century off 183 balls.

Pandey remained unbeaten on 208 off 186 balls with 14 boundaries and 11 sixes. Opener Ravikumar Smarth struck 140 (14x4) and was dismissed by Arjun Tendulkar (2/79).

In reply, Goa were 45/1 in 23 overs.

Himachal bat with purpose after first-innings debacle

Himachal Pradesh's top and middle-order batted with purpose to bail them out from a hopeless situation as they were just 10 runs away from wiping out a massive deficit against Uttarakhand at stumps on day two of their Ranji Trophy Group A match.

Uttarakhand seamer Deepak Dhapola, who was unplayable on Tuesday and returned with enviable figures of 8 for 35 to dismiss Himachal for just 49 runs in the first innings, could not recreate the same magic on Wednesday at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium.

At stumps, Himachal were 277 for four, just 10 runs away from Uttarakhand's first innings lead of 287 runs.

With Akash Vasisht and Rishi Dhawan batting on 73 and 32 runs respectively, the duo have, for now, ensured Himachal will not suffer an innings defeat, though with two full days of play left, Uttarakhand are in pole position to win the contest and earn full points -- and perhaps a bonus if they win by 10 wickets.

Earlier, Uttarakhand continued from where they had left off on Tuesday at 295 for six, with Aditya Tare adding just one run to his overnight score of 91 before being dismissed by Vaibhav Arora.

The other overnight batter Abhay Negi added 28 more runs and eventually the home team's first innings wound up at 336 off 75.4 overs.

With a massive lead of 287, and the fragility of the opponents laid bare by Dhapola in the first innings, Uttarakhand would have fancied their chances of finishing the game inside two day.

But the determination showed by openers Raghav Dhawan (32) and Prashant Chopra (43), rubbed off on later-order batters, especially Ankit Kalsi (44) and Akash Vasisht (73 not out), as they played sensibly to make amends for their first-innings recklessness.

Dhapola sent down 12 overs but only got the wicket of Ankit Kalsi, while left-arm spinner Mayank Mishra was the most successful home team bowler, returning figures of 22-1-85-2.

Pranshu, Harshit lead Delhi fightback against TN

Young Delhi all-rounder Pranshu Vijayaran put up a gutsy show before twins Aparajith and Indrajith were dismissed in identical fashion by speedster Harshit Rana as Tamil Nadu reached 214 for five at stumps on day two in a Ranji Trophy.

Vijayaran, playing his second first-class game, smashed spinners Washington Sundar (0/36 in 11 overs) and R Sai Kishore (0/32 in 4 overs) to score 58 off 79 balls to take Delhi to a respectable first innings score of 303.

He (1/14 in 8 overs) then bowled on a good channel and got the dangerous N Jagadeesan (34) caught behind but it was Harshit (3/73 in 16 overs), who tirelessly dug it in short and induced identical miscued pull shots from Aparajith (57) and Indrajith (71), both caught at mid-wicket.

Tamil Nadu, however, batted with a lot of positive intent right from start as Sai Sudharshan (25) hit six fours in a jiffy during the pre lunch session before left arm seamer Kuldip Yadav (1/50 in 10 overs) got one to move away, getting a nick.

Aparajith and Indrajith added 86 runs with consummate ease as they kept the run rate over 4 runs per over.

Left arm spinner Vikas Mishra (0/56 in 12 overs) was once again ineffective as he bowled to a defensive field which allowed Baba brothers to rotate strike with ease.

However, credit must be given to big bodied youngster Harshit, who learnt from his erratic first spell and started digging it in short, trying to take advantage of the two paced track.

"I was ready to concede a few boundaries but plan was to keep on bowling the short ball and allow the brothers to play their shots and wait for a mistake," Harshit, who has been coached by former India seamer Amit Bhandari, told reporters after the day's play.

Both Aparajith and Indrajith committed to the short ball early but it didn't come to them at a pace that they expected and hence there was no power in both strokes.

Another man who would be very disappointed is Washington Sundar, who was dismissed by an ordinary delivery drifting down leg side and his tickle ended in keeper Anuj Rawat's gloves.

While Tamil Nadu need 90 runs with seasoned Vijay Shankar (14 batting) at the crease alongside Pradosh Ranjan Paul (2 batting), skipper Indrajith conceded that the five fours and three sixes hit by Pranshu in the morning hurt them.

"Yes, we gave 40 runs too many. In the morning, I was forced to bowl with spinners as we were running short on over rate. At this point, I am not even thinking about outright win and want to ensure first innings lead first," Indrajith said.

Suryakumar's 95 helps Mumbai reach 230 against Saurashtra 

In Mumbai, India's white ball star Suryakumar Yadav smashed 95 off 107 balls to take Mumbai to 230 all out in response to Saurashtra's first innings total of 289.

Mumbai lost the first innings lead but bounced back to reduce Saurashtra to 120 for six in their second innings. Mumbai left arm spinner Shams Mulani once again did the bulk of the damage with four wickets.

Going into day four, Saurashtra lead Mumbai by 179 runs and would be looking to add another 50 runs at least to make a match out of it on a turning track.

The 2020 Ranji champions will be relying a lot on left-arm spinner Dharmendra Singh Jadeja and young offie Yuvrajsingh Dodiya, who took four wickets in the first innings.
